Menith Wood Millennium Green Celebrates 25 Years with a Special Addition

To mark its landmark 25th anniversary, the Menith Wood Millennium Green has installed a unique and practical tribute to its local wildlife: a brand new owl post.

Perched proudly in roughly the centre of the green, the newly erected chestnut post features a simple etched and burnt 2025. While it serves as a wonderful commemorative monument for the community's milestone, its primary mission is purely conservation-focused.

Helping Local Owls Thrive

The green’s wide expanse, the distance between its boundary hedges, can make it quite challenging for local owls to hunt effectively for food. To give them a helping hand, and following expert advice from the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, the trustees commissioned the post to provide a much-needed additional perching spot right out in the open, making hunting significantly easier for the birds.

This latest addition joins a network of existing owl boxes already situated around the edges of the green, all designed to encourage these magnificent birds of prey to make full use of the shared community space.

Better Late Than Never!

Of course, no community project ever goes entirely without a touch of local humour. Organisers joked that they hope the local owls won't spend too much time discussing the rather extended timeline of the installation, specifically, the full year that elapsed between the initial hole being dug and the post finally being erected!

With the wait now well and truly behind them, the trustees and residents alike can sit back, enjoy the green's silver jubilee, and wait for the sight of droppings around the new post; a sure sign of its use.
